The first major technical developments in the animationprocess can be traced to the work (and patents) of John Braystarting in 1910. His work layed the groundwork for the use oftranslucent cels ( short for celluloid) in compositing multiplelayers of drawings into a final image as well as the use of greyscale (as opposed to black and white) drawings. Laterdevelopments by Bray and others enhanced the overlay idea toinclude multiple translucent pieces of celluloid (cels), added apeg system for registration, and the drawing of the background onlong sheets of paper so that panning (translating the cameraparallel to the plane of the background) could be performed moreeasily. While camera movement is perfectly possible in stop-motion and cel animation,both lead to problems. In the case of stop-motion, the movement has to be pre-plannedsince there is no going back without having to reposition the models and reshootevery frame from new angles. Camera movement in stop-motion is thus unlikely tobe the result of spontaneous experimentation. Cel animation is faced with adifferent problem. As the camera moves, backgrounds change. Simple linearmovement - a tracking shot - can be accomplished relatively easily withoutredrawing, but panning changes the perspective and can force redrawing of thewhole background for each frame, a hopelessly uneconomic task.
