In 1968 the British National Portrait Gallery finally started exhibiting photographic works and the work of earlier photographers such as Penn and Avedon which was originally created to present fashion and celebrities of their time became the subject of major museum retrospectives internationally, thus establishing them not only chronographers but as artists in their own right.

Rembrandt is generally considered one of the greatest painters in European art largely due to the great success of his portrait works. Rembrandt’s legacy is continued through the application of his lighting approach to photography.
The 21st century is yet to be defined by a style of portraiture but at Fabulous Noble we believe that contemporary portraits will be defined by new media; much in the same way that the art world has developed. We believe that the potential for outmost creativity and excellence resides in illustration and design.

Note: the Presidential portraits of Mount Rushmore, although clearly works of art, are not regarded as Land Art since they do not celebrate the land but the images made from it.

The 1980s and 1990s introduced new media such as video, performance, and installation to galleries leading to an overhaul in the definition of art. Within this brave new world order photography was finally established as a bona fide fine art practice thus providing a platform for a new generation of photographers to challenge the boundaries of this medium. A multitude of new approaches to photographic portraiture emerged.

The American Museum of Modern Art describes Sherman as “one of the most important and influential artists in contemporary art” and adds “Throughout her career, she has presented a sustained, eloquent, and provocative exploration of the construction of contemporary identity and the nature of representation, drawn from the unlimited supply of images from movies, TV, magazines, the Internet, and art history.” From a portraiture practice perspective Sherman’s work is interesting in that it conceptualises ideas about the identity of her subjects, with the emerging impression transcending the physical attributes of the sitter.

Robert Mapplethorpe received a flurry of attention for his skilfully executed portraits, some of which covered very controversial themes such as sadomasochism and homoeroticism all the while demonstrating inspiration drawn from old masters such as Caravaggio and Vermeer.
